In this series, we invite PhD candidates to come in and deliver their layman's talk, to make their research accessible to a wide audience.

Our next guest is Debbie Oyeku.

The spatial planning process is the arrangement of places and spaces: warehouses, schools, transportation networks, farms, hospitals, and so on. Planning support systems were introduced decades ago to make the planning process very easy, relatable, and usable with real-time data.

But the extent to which they've been used has been contested by researchers.

Debbie's research therefore investigates how the planning support system becomes a part of planning, practice and reality.

Specifically, she focuses on how one planning support system - known as the Spatial Development Framework - has been used in Rwanda.
