Drones, the Perfect Survival Ally. Ep.3: Sourcing Different Types of Wood
6:57
Stranded on a desert island? You've got a lot to handle: finding food, sourcing fresh water, making a shelter, building a fire and signalling for help. Doesn't sound like a one-person job, does it? You'd be better off with a friend - one that's actively helping.
In this video series, we'll show you how a drone is the ideal survival ally for these essential survival tasks.
In this episode we focus sourcing different types of wood - a resource you cannot go without on a deserted island. Essential for building shelter; making fire; but also for tools, for rafts and for creating rope. But they all require different types of wood. It may be hard to identify suitable tree species, and once you've run short on them, you’ll spend days scouting the island with no result.
Assistant professors and drone enthusiasts Panagiotis Nyktas and Florian Ellsäẞer will teach you all about multispectral cameras and the crucial information they hold when it comes to identifying different types of trees.
Panagiotis will tell you all about the real-world applications of this technology, and – form the comfort of the studio – walk us through all the steps he’d take if he stranded on a deserted island, while Florian truly goes out into 'the wild' to demonstrate how it’s done in the field – including an ‘attempt’’ at making fire with the ideal firewood.
Small teaser: he shows that if truly wanted to survive, you might take some bushcraft lessons as well..
Watch to learn how this cutting-edge technology can help reveal what species are out there - not just for survival, but for monitoring essential biodiversity elements as well!
